About me and my therapy practice

I am a practitioner of person-centred therapy. Person-centred counselling is one of the humanistic modalities or approaches. A person-centred therapist believes that, given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true self, which he termed ‘self-actualisation’.

To help you achieve self-actualisation, the person-centred therapist will offer:

  1. unconditional positive regard (UPR) – accepting and valuing you
  2. congruence - being honest and transparent in how they experience you and your world
  3. empathic understanding – seeing your viewpoint as if they were you

Based on my experience in education and work with families, it is clear that one of my strengths is my ability to come alongside families and help them work through difficulties to find a resolution. Through my years of experience, I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills that allow me to build rapport with families and create a safe space for them to share their concerns. I may also have a talent for active listening, which enables me to understand the root causes of any issues and identify potential solutions that can work for everyone involved. Additionally, my extensive experience in education has given me a deep understanding of child development and family dynamics, which can be invaluable in helping families navigate challenging situations.

During our sessions I will help you to realise what resources and support are available to you that you can use to work through your own issues, build your self-confidence and appreciate that you always have options. I will treat you as the expert on yourself, as no-one else knows exactly what it’s like to be you.

I will not judge you, no matter what you bring to the session. This helps build a trustworthy relationship in which you can feel free and supported to disclose whatever is troubling you. Eventually it will lead you to discover your own abilities and autonomy, so that you can cope with current and future problems.

Practice description

Counselling/therapy can be useful for anyone who wants to explore the way they're thinking or feeling further, as well as for anyone experiencing a problem or issue they are keen to resolve.

Some of the issues we can work through within counselling/therapy include the following:

Addictions or substance abuse

Counselling/therapy aims to relieve psychological addiction by exploring the root cause while helping to develop new ways of thinking.

Bereavement

Some people benefit from speaking openly to a counsellor about their feelings to help ease the process and resolve any remaining issues they may have.

Bullying

Counselling can offer victims the chance to seek help from authorities (if appropriate) as well as address the psychological repercussions in a safe environment.

Mental health

Suffering from a mental health issue such as schizophrenia or depression can feel incredibly isolating. Counselling/therapy looks to discuss the feelings that arise in conjunction with these kinds of mental health issues, as well as overcome any personal challenges or frustrations.

Relationships

As someone with extensive experience working with families, I understand the importance of strong relationships within a family unit. Parent to child relationships are perhaps the most fundamental, and it's essential to cultivate trust, respect, and open communication. It's also crucial to support each other and show empathy, especially during difficult times.

Trauma

In a counselling session, trauma victims are encouraged to explore their feelings regarding the incident and look into how these could be resolved or changed.

Other issues

Feelings of stress, anxiety and low self-esteem are becoming all too common in today's society. Counselling/therapy can offer practical advice for overcoming these kinds of issues, as well as allowing you the space to vent your frustrations and feelings.

My first session

The first session, which could be in the form of a phone call or online session, will typically involve getting to know you a little, and giving you the chance to share some of your reasons for seeking therapy.
